Preservation Iowa

Preservation Iowa is a project that holds special meaning in Gradient9 Studios’ portfolio. This respected statewide nonprofit is dedicated to the rehabilitation and reuse of Iowa’s historic buildings—places that tell the stories of our communities, our culture, and our past. Their mission is both economically smart and environmentally responsible, ensuring these treasured landmarks continue to serve Iowans and inspire visitors for generations to come.

Preservation Iowa needed a brand and website that could communicate both purpose and passion. Their work spans everything from saving endangered landmarks to celebrating Iowa’s architectural heritage, and their digital presence needed to clearly show what they do, why it matters, and how people can support their mission.

We began by creating a new logo and visual identity. Inspired by stained glass windows found in many historic buildings, the logo blends rich, vibrant colors with a subtle nod to the shape of Iowa. The result is a mark that feels both timeless and fresh—honoring history while looking confidently toward the future.

The website brings this identity to life. We designed a layout that puts Iowa’s incredible historic buildings front and center, using striking photography to highlight the beauty, character, and craftsmanship of the places Preservation Iowa works so hard to protect. Each page invites visitors to explore the stories behind these landmarks and understand their importance to our state’s heritage.

A key focus of the site is clarity and engagement. We organized content so visitors can easily learn about Preservation Iowa’s programs, see the impact of their work, and discover the many ways they can get involved. Prominent, easy-to-use donation and involvement tools ensure that supporting the organization is simple and seamless.

The Preservation Iowa website is a digital home that reflects the heart of the organization—celebrating history, inspiring stewardship, and making preservation accessible to everyone.
